                                                                            We Worship Together

                                                                              September 10, 2017

Personal Meditation:  “Providence brings no less a person that Pharaoh’s daughter just at that juncture, guides her to the place where this poor infant lay, inclines her heart to pity it, which she dares do, when none else durst.  Never did poor child cry so seasonably, as this did; the babe wept, which moved her compassion, as no doubt his beauty did.”  John Wesley, commentary on Exodus 2:5.

OLD TESTAMENT                                                        Exodus 2:1-10

Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a Levite woman.  The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was a fine baby, she hid him three months.  When she could hide him no longer she got a papyrus basket for him, and plastered it with bitumen and pitch; she put the child in it and placed it among the reeds on the bank of the river.  His sister stood at a distance, to see what would happen to him.  The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her attendants walked beside the river.  She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid to bring it.  When she opened it, she saw the child.  He was crying, and she took pity on him.  “This must be one of the Hebrews’ children,” she said.  Then his sister said to  Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?”  Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Yes.”  So the girl went and called the child’s mother.  Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child and nurse it for me, and I will give you your wages.”  So the woman took the child and nursed it.  When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and she took him as her son.  She named him Moses, “because,”  she said, “I drew him, out of the water.”

NEW TESTAMENT                                                       Acts 7:17-22

“But as the time drew near for the fulfillment of the promise that God had made to Abraham, our people in Egypt increased and multiplied until another king who had not known Joseph ruled over Egypt. He dealt craftily with our race and forced our ancestors to abandon their infants so that they would die.  At this time Moses was born, and he was beautiful before God.  For three months he was brought up in his father’s house; and when he was abandoned, Pharaoh’s daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son.  So Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in his words and deeds.

*GOSPEL READING                                                           Luke 2:22-33

When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord.  “Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord”), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”  Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him.  It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.  Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, “Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.”  And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him.

Leader:  The word of God for the people of God.

People:  Thanks be to God!
