Personal Meditation:  “It is now two years and almost four months since I left my native country in order to teach the Georgian Indians the nature of Christianity.  But what have I learned myself in the meantime?  Why, that I who went to America to convert others was never myself converted to God.”  John Wesley, January 29, 1738

*CALL TO WORSHIP                                                       Psalm 46:1-7

Leader:   God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in

               trouble.

People:  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should

               change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the

               sea;

Leader:   Though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains

               tremble with its tumult.

People:   There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,

                the holy habitation of the Most High.

Leader:    God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved;

                God will help it when the morning dawns.

People:    The nations are in an uproar; the kingdoms totter; he

                 utters his voice, the earth melts.

Leader:      The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Tell me the stories of Jesus I love to hear; things I would ask him to tell me if he were here; scenes by the wayside, tales of the sea, stories of Jesus, tell them to me.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON                                            Isaiah 54:13-14

All your children shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the prosperity of your children.  In righteousness you shall be established; you shall be far from oppression, for you shall not fear; and from terror, for it shall not come near you.

NEW TESTAMENT LESSON                                          Ephesians 6:1-4

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.  “Honor your father and mother”—this is the first commandment with a promise: “so that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”  And, fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

*GOSPEL LESSON                                                              John 8:1-11

Then each of them went home, while Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.  Early in the morning he came again to the temple.  All the people came to him and he sat down and began to teach them.  The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery; and making her stand before all of them, they said to him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery.  Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women.  Now what do you say?”  They said this to test him, so that they might have some charge to bring against him.  Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.  When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”  And once again he bent down and wrote on the ground.  When they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the elders; and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.  Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman, where are they?  Has no one condemned you?”  She said, “No one sir,” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you.  Go your way, and from now on do not sin again.”

Leader:  The word of God for the people of God.

People:  Thanks be to God.
